The Guyanese dollar (GYD) is the official currency of Guyana, however US dollars can also be used for some transactions, such as at hotels. If you plan on using US dollars for payment it is best to inquire ahead of your trip, places that accept this currency. Credit/debit card use is growing within retail and hospitality, however the country is still largely a cash-based economy, so exchanging some currency in advance is the best option to ensure you are covered.
